personality

The easiest way to describe August would be best put into a single word: disciplined. From an early age, August has been dedicated to following orders and doing what he was meant to do. He very rarely listens to his emotions as he prefers to listen to his logic over such trifling things like emotions. Once he is set on doing something, there is almost nothing that will hold him back. It is this sort of attitude that has earned him a reputation of being a “hard ass” in the Watcher’s Council, something that was quite difficult to obtain seeing as how many Watchers are considered “hard asses.”

Surprising as it may be to some people, August also has a bit of an ego, though he rarely displays it. He is very confident in himself, and almost twice as prideful. Really, do you see any Watchers at his age with his skills and his reputation? He quite thought not, and that’s because he is August Mühlbauer and he is quite plainly better than you. So it goes without saying that his presence is a bit more powerful than he sometimes intends due to this arrogance, though it is unclear whether or not he truly cares for changing this for anyone.

But there are some things about August that he keeps well-guarded from other people. He is deeply scarred by the death of his mother, so much that he greatly dislikes going into small, dark places and generally avoids wandering around outside at night. August has a collection of crucifixes and tonnes of bottles of holy water ready at his disposal, and he rarely leaves his home without at least one of these items. It is perhaps because of his mother’s death that he has avoided romantic contact with other women, in spite of whatever attraction he might feel for one of them.

background

August’s history is about as normal as seeing a flying pig. Born to a Slayer and her Watcher, Hilda and Adam, August’s early life consisted of constant danger and vampires attempting to rip his throat open. It goes without saying that it was this little aspect of his life that contributes heaviest to his very serious, very stiff behaviour today. Other than experiencing near-death every other week or so, August’s childhood was nothing short of loving, and he knew that by the fact that his parents would do anything to save him.

It wasn’t until his fourth birthday that everything changed for him. He had been playing outside in the dark, and had not bothered to take his wooden crucifix with him. He was once again been taken away by some vampire who had a vendetta against his mother, and when she came to retrieve like she always did, she was ambushed by a very large group of them. In spite of being overpowered, Hilda still managed to grab her son and literally toss him out of the tomb and into the sunlight. She had yelled at him to run away, but he hadn’t even gotten five feet before he realised his mother wasn’t coming with him. He could hear her screaming, the vampires laughing, and the sounds had driven him to find a sharp stick and run back for the tomb. Thankfully, his father caught him just before he entered the dark and refused to allow either of them to enter the tomb.

After Hilda’s death, Adam had resolved to pack their things and move as far away from their home as possible. August didn’t fully understand everything just yet. His mother was coming back, wasn’t she? She always did, no matter how dangerous things were. She was always back and she always brought him a treat of some kind. For some reason, Adam could not find it within himself to inform his boy that mummy wasn’t going to be back anytime soon, and so he allowed him to think she would until they reached their destination. Confused and hurt by the news, August immediately began to take the blame for her death. No matter what Adam said to try and reassure him, August was convinced that had he been stronger, braver, or faster, he wouldn’t have been picked up by those vampires and his mother would be alive. For years he would be trapped in this mindset, blaming himself for what had happened to his beloved mother.

But by the time he was old enough to attend middle school, August had nearly forgotten about the entire incident that involved his mother’s death. Even so, he couldn’t shake the feeling that it had all been his fault and it was evident that his behaviour was very much built upon that mindset. From the time he was very young, his father was teaching him how to be a good Watcher for his future ward, and the most important lesson of all was that he should never fall in love with her. August understood this lesson very well, knowing that his father was still hurting over the loss of his lover.

August’s grades and behaviour in school were impeccable. His teachers would commend Adam for raising such a dedicated boy who never got himself into any sort of trouble. August would attend Watcher’s School following his passing of year 12, and he quickly became notorious for how determined and vigilant he was to his studies. It was evident to many that he was going to be either the cream of the crop or a head honcho before he was thirty. This was all partly true. August was indeed a top notch Watcher, but he didn’t place himself first for anything. What he was told to do, he did, and all he had wanted was to meet his ward.

Yet even after he became a bonafide Watcher, it was clear that Watchers were becoming obsolete following an incident in 1999 and the spell one Willow Rosenberg had cast later on. Still, he would not allow that to sway him, and he was determined to do what he could to assist the Slayer he was destined to watch over. So when the time came that he was finally to meet her, he discovered that she had been killed before he even had a chance to assist her in anything. Just as he was about to resign himself to another Slayer (or more years at the Watcher’s Council), news of Rachel’s resurrection had caught his attention, and he very quickly packed his things and left for Los Angeles.
